Driving in Zimbabwe
If you plan to drive to Harare for our wedding, please take note of the following road and vehicle requirements to ensure a smooth and compliant journey.
Vehicle Safety Essentials
All vehicles on Zimbabwean roads must carry:
- 1. Two warning triangles
- 2. A working fire extinguisher
- 3. A reflective vest or jacket
These items may be requested during road inspections.
Spot Fines
Traffic fines in Zimbabwe are often issued on the spot and must be paid in cash.
To avoid inconvenience, carry small denominations of USD.
Typical fines range from $5 to $30 depending on the violation.
Temporary Import Permit (TIP)
If your vehicle is not registered in Zimbabwe, you must obtain a Temporary Import Permit (TIP) before driving beyond the border. Keep this document in your vehicle at all times.
Documents required:
- Vehicle Registration Book
- Driver’s Passport
- Affidavit (if the vehicle is not in the driver’s name)
You can apply for an electronic TIP online:

Total cost: $50, broken down as:
- Road Access Fee: $10
- Third-Party Insurance: $30
- Carbon Tax: $10
Toll Gate Fees (One Way to Harare)
Toll fees are payable in USD, South African Rand (ZAR), or Botswana Pula (BWP).
Payments can also be made using Visa or Mastercard debit cards.
| Route | Distance | Total Toll Fees | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| South Africa (Beitbridge → Harare) | ~580 km | $16 | Shortest & best maintained |
| Botswana (Plumtree → Harare) | ~700 km | $24 | Smooth route, slightly longer |
| Namibia (Victoria Falls → Harare) | ~900 km | $26 | Longer route, road under rehabilitation |
Note: The Victoria Falls route is scenic but slower; the Botswana route offers better roads and faster access to Harare.
Travel Tips
- Fuel stations accept USD cash and major cards, but rural stops may prefer cash.
- Drive cautiously — wildlife crossings and pedestrians are common outside cities.
- Avoid night driving on unfamiliar routes.
- Keep your documents and receipts safe at all times.
These items may be requested during road inspections.
